FALCON INN Painswick GL6 6UN |
For all the refurbishments and decoration that has happened over the years, the bar always remains a rather drab, but traditional setting. The latest incumbents seem to suffer from 'reversed pump clip syndrome' - only one of three pumps in action when we were visiting.
Butcombe Gold
@ 13th February 2010
|
FIVE MILE HOUSE Duntisbourne Abbots GL7 7JR |
This should feature higher on priority visits, but with a tiny bar area and the dreaded 'reserved' signs on other tables, it can deter the casual drinker from stopping too often. Regular ales include Donnington BB, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Young's Bitter with an occassional flair of brilliance in guest choice.
Otter Bitter / Wye Valley's HPA / Young's Bitter
@ 24th June 2010
|
FLEET INN Twyning GL20 6DG |
Severnside pub that really takes advantage of it's location but falling well below expectations on the real ale front. Three pumps down to one because "there is no call for it", not that it is promoted in any of their adverts! Hard to believe the Tribute was actually a decent pint.
St.Austell's Tribute
@ 18th October 2008
|
FOSTONS ASH The Camp, Birdlip GL6 7ES |
Not recommended for a drop in drink (unless it is summer when you can sit on the patio / garden). Let's face it, this is a restaurant more than a pub and it can feel uncomfortable just having a drink as there are few available tables for such activities. That said, if you are eating and fancy some real ale then there is a good local selection, but again the price of a pint reflects it is not your average pub.
Otter Bitter / Stroud's Organic Ale / Stroud's Tom Long
@ 4th July 2009
|
FOUNTAIN INN Gloucester GL1 2NW |
Just what a city centre pub should be. Not dowdy, but bright and busy. Not themed, but traditional. Even better when they set the bar full of real ales. An excellent pint.
Battledown's OBJ / Greene King's Abbot Ale / Hook Norton's Old Hooky / St.Austell's Tribute / Shepherd Neame's Spitfire / Timothy Taylor Landlord
@ 4th March 2010
|
FOX AND HOUNDS Coaley GL11 5EG |
A traditional village pub that changes every time we visit - but not neccessarily in a positive direction. The unusual guest ales don't seem to surface anymore, and where there was a choice of up to three ales, only a solitary pump was in action when we called, albeit an excellent pint. Very cosy, though, especially in front of the fire on a cold evening.
Butcombe Gold

FROMEBRIDGE MILL Whitminster GL2 7PD |
Well known for the carvery and restaurant, but fortunately there is a large bar area and a wonderful patio overlooking the weir and lake if you only want to drink. A Greene King outlet only. Even when celebrating National Cask Week when we visited, the majority of ales offered during the time were from Greene King owned breweries.
Greene King Hare Raiser / Old Speckled Hen / Olde Trip / Rooster's Yankee / Otter Bitter

GARDENER'S ARMS Alderton GL20 8NL |
Whilst providing a well supported culinary side to it's business, the pub is very enthusiastic concerning real ale including a top ten board of up and coming ales. Unusual offerings from all around the country blend in with the more known names. An excellent pint with knowledgeable and friendly owners.
John Courage Best / Saltaire's Copper Ale / Shepherd Neame's Spitfire / Usher's 1824
@22nd April 2010
|
GEORGE HOTEL Newent GL18 1PU |
Not a flamboyant or sophisticated place but what's lacking in style is made up with in the ale choice. Up to four pumps on with local brews given a good representation.
Blue Bear's White Bear / Butcombe Bitter / Freeminer Bitter / Goff's Jouster
@ 22nd September 2009
|
GEORGE INN Cambridge GL2 7AL |
Another eaterie rather than true 'local', with attention on food rather than drink. It fails ignomiously, all too often, with reversed pump clip syndrome, but a good pint can be forthcoming if the clips are facing your way.
Butcombe Bitter / Mole's Best / Mole's Elmo's Fire
@ 27th March 2010
|
GEORGE INN Frocester GL10 3TQ |
An inn for all occasions with bars, restaurant and function room. A good choice of ales available with up to five pumps in action, sometimes all with recognisable names but if the timing is right you might just get that welcome surprise. Be aware that only some of the ales are on display as there are two bars and there are different pumps in each.
Butcombe Bitter / North Cotswold Summer solstice / Skinner's Betty Stoggs / Timothy Taylor Landlord
@ 18th August 2009
|
GOLDEN HEART Nettleton Bottom GL4 8LA |
Always four ales on the blackboard, with frequent changes, although premium ales are not featured as heavily as in the past. If there is a great demand for their catering side, all tables may be booked and the bar areas are tiny.
Brakspear's Bitter / Cheltenham's Festival Gold / Northumberland's Sheepdog / Wickwar's Coopers
@ 12th June 2010
|
GREYHOUND INN Pope's Hill GL14 1JX |
On the Gloucester side of the Forest of Dean in a very rural setting. Butcombe is the brewery of choice with at least one of their ales available and maybe one other brewery represented.
Butcombe Bitter / Sharp's Doom Bar
@ 17th March 2010
|
GREYHOUND Siddington GL7 6HR |
A Wadworth house with the usual range of standards and the occassional bonus of associated guests, but make sure to check the pumps in the bar and lounge as they can be different and are not always advertised as such.
Bishop's Tipple / Henry IPA / JCB / St. George and the Dragon Ale/ 6X
@ 24th April 2010
