FALCON INN Painswick |
For all the refurbishments and decoration that has happened over the years, the bar always remains a rather drab, but traditional setting. The beer selection alters once in a while, but then settles into a routine.
Bombardier / Greene King IPA / Otter Ale
@ 15th April 2008
|
FARMER'S ARMS Guiting Power |
Wonderful village, wonderful countryside and quaint local pub, but Donnington's only served here and at best an average pint.
Donnington BB / Donnington SBA
@ 3rd June 2007
|
FIVE MILE HOUSE Duntisbourne Abbots |
This should feature higher on priority visits, but with a tiny bar area and the dreaded 'reserved' signs on other tables, it can deter the casual drinker from stopping too often. Good selection of changing guests and unusual ones too (e.g. Golden Arrow / Somerset Champflower). Regular ales may include Timothy Taylor Landlord or one of the Young's brews.
Donnington's BB / Timothy Taylor Landlord / Young's Bitter
@ 17th July 2007
|
FLEET INN Twyning |
Severnside pub that really takes advantage of it's location. An erratic reputation of late concerning real ale but three pumps on when we visited and hard to find fault!
Whittington's Cat's Whiskers / St.Austell's Tribute / 6X
@ 29th April 2008
|
FOSTONS ASH The Camp, Birdlip |
More alterations and getting further away from the traditional Fostons inn. Feels less like a pub than ever, especially with the weird mix of decor. However, if this is your preference then the good news is that there is now a three pump line up instead of one.
Greene King IPA / Old Speckled Hen / Stroud's Tom Long
@ 2nd August 2007
|
FOUNTAIN INN Gloucester |
Just what a city centre pub should be. Not dowdy, but bright and busy. Not themed, but traditional. Even better when they set the bar full of real ales, with a regularly changing guest.
Abbot Ale / Archer's Golden / BOB / Severn Vale's Dursley Steam Bitter
@ 18th December 2007
|
FOUR MILE HOUSE INN Brookethorpe |
More for eating than drinking these days with extensions to buildings and car parks to cater for it all. The ale selection is gradually improving though, with John Smiths Cask and similar brews a distant memory. Good beer if the pump clip is facing your way.
Cotswold Way / Greene King IPA / Old Speckled Hen
@ 7th November 2006
|
FOX AND HOUNDS Coaley |
A traditional village pub that is slowly changing to keep apace with current demands. The unusual guest ales don't seem to surface anymore, but usually three or four pumps in action.
Black Sheep / Doom Bar / Otter Ale
@ 25th September 2007
|
FROGMILL HOTEL Shipton Oliffe |
A quintessential Cotswold hotel with history, location and atmosphere. For years in the doldrums with respect to real ale but made headway recently by offering a Goffs seasonal as a guest. The other pumps are not necessarily inspiring to us, especially when confronted by two sporting the Courage logo as sometimes happens.
Goff's Galahad / John Courage Directors / London Pride
@ 11th July 2006
|
FROMEBRIDGE MILL Whitminster |
Well known for the carvery and restaurant, but fortunately there is a large bar area and a wonderful patio overlooking the weir and lake if you only want to drink. A Greene King outlet only with Old Speckled Hen normally the second pump.
Greene King IPA
@ 23rd June 2007
|
GARDENER'S ARMS Alderton |
Whilst providing a well supported culinary side to it's business, the pub is very enthusiastic concerning real ale. That said, the selection can be a bit hit and miss, with unusual premiums one day and session beers only the next.
Brains Bitter / Jennings' World's Greatest Liar / Three Castles Knight's Porter
@ 20th November 2007
|
GEORGE HOTEL Newent |
Not a flamboyant or sophisticated place but what's lacking in style is made up with in the ale choice. Up to four pumps on with local brews given a good representation.
Butcombe Gold / Freeminer Bitter / Hancocks HB / Goff's Tournament
@ 19th February 2008
|
GEORGE INN Cambridge |
Another eaterie rather than true pub, with attention on food rather than drink and therefore not frequented too often. If the pump clip is facing your way though, then a good pint can be forthcoming.
Adnam's Bitter / BOB / Old Speckled Hen
@ 3rd November 2007
|
GEORGE INN Frocester |
An inn for all occasions with bars, restaurant and function room. A good choice of ales available with up to five pumps in action, sometimes all with recognisable names but if the timing is right you might just get that welcome surprise. Be aware that only some of the ales are on display as there are two bars and there are different pumps in each.
Caledonian Deuchars / Exmoor Ale / Jouster / Stroud's Tom Long / 6X
@ 18th March 2008
|
GLOUCESTER OLD SPOT Elms Piff, Cheltenham |
A true local if ever there was one, even an added restaurant couldn't change that. Never too sure what to expect here with walkouts not uncommon.
Donnington BB / Greene King IPA
@ 16th January 2007
|
GOLDEN HEART Nettleton Bottom |
Always four ales on the blackboard, with frequent changes, although premium ales are not featured as heavily as in the past. If there is a great demand for their catering side, all tables may be booked and the bar areas are tiny.
Cheltenham Gold / Cumberland Ale / Festival Gold / Otter Bitter
@ 22nd March 2008
|
GREEN DRAGON Cockleford |
More a restaurant than a pub, where there is usually an abundance of John Courage ales and other less appealing brews on offer.
Butcombe Bitter / Hook Norton Best / John Courage Directors
@ 27th December 2006
|
GREYHOUND INN Pope's Hill |
On the Gloucester side of the Forest of Dean in a very rural setting. Gone down in our estimation due to a single pump of Butcombe Bitter confronting us instead of the expected couple of tantalising guests.
Butcombe Bitter
@ 14th August 2007
|
GREYHOUND Siddington |
A Wadworth house with the usual range of standards and the occassional bonus of associated guests such as Tanglefoot, but make sure to check the pumps in the bar and lounge as they can be different and are not always advertised as such.
Henry IPA / JCB / Summersault / 6X
@ 17th July 2007
