Strangely, there are few Cotswold pubs located where their gardens get the full benefit of the evening sun, but this is one of them. Transformed over the years into a very acceptable venue. Abbot Ale has now been jettisoned in favour of the better selling Tribute and a guest ale added.

A bar, restaurant and hotel complex with an insinuated olde worlde ambience (originally a 14th century building but with extensive modern alterations). Two, rather than three pumps lately with good support for local micro breweries.

Benefitting from being a Severnside inn, with caravan and camping in the summer, up to five pumps may be in action with many different brews being offered. Visit in winter, however, and Donnington's BB coupled with one other ale may be all that is on offer.

Now an Arkells outlet with a complete decorative makeover and thriving once again. Three managers in a year makes it hard to follow where its going, e.g up to five ales from the Arkells stable, with some on tap and some on hand pumps were seen last year but now there are three just on handpumps. Early days perhaps.

Stunning views across to the west, an ideal place to witness a sunset. In winter, the log fire makes it the cosiest of pubs, but with Donnington around the corner, no prizes for guessing the beer.

One of Gloucester's ancient and historic monuments that has seen it's fair share of upheaval over the years and now in desperate need of a facelift; a popular watering hole that changes hands far too many times. Real ale has always been a mainstay although the availability of the unusual brews has declined rapidly. Still an impressive line-up nevertheless.

Not a lot of passing trade on the small, winding lanes through Chalford so this is the definitive 'local'. Not so hot on the premiums these days, but the 'back to your roots' experience is well worth savouring.

A backstreet pub maybe, but well worth seeking out. Convivial atmosphere with the added bonus of up to four pumps in action, three from Hook Norton plus a guest.

Recommendations come very high for this popular real ale venue with now up to six selections on the blackboard and good support for the acclaimed local village brewery. The remainder can be just about any brew in the country and change consistently - well worth making a trip for.

On the outskirts of Stroud but not quite a rural pub, with dining not as prominent as a lot of places. Ale choice does get altered around a bit, but no big surprises.

Very much a dining pub, but plenty of space if calling in just for a drink. Down to one pump only now with London Pride alternating with 6X, so not exactly a thriving real ale venue.

Situated in the middle of the Common, a complex of restaurant, function room and bar, complete with a reasonable selection of ales. Greene King is a favourite with the pub group but on the plus side there is support for local breweries as well. Three or four pumps with Stroud's Tom Long being 'turned round' on calling in.

This is the opposite of snug and cosy; the trendy minimalistic look that has been taken to the ultimate, this is stark and sterile - no pictures, curtains or other decor. If you like a pint in this sort of environment then you will be well looked after as the ale news is much healthier with three pumps in action which change regularly. Make sure you check both bars for the optimum choice though.
